Then I pressed the “on” button and ran the tool down smaller sections, about an inch and a half thick. Comparatively, the Corrale, Dyson’s more traditional flatiron, is almost a full pound lighter at 1.23 pounds, and its Supersonic blow-dryer is about 20% lighter at 1.8 pounds. The best deal on the Airwrap right now is at Nordstrom Rack and Best Buy, where it’s on sale for $200 off (or 33 percent off) for the refurbished model. At Dyson’s website, you’ll get a complimentary gift worth $40 plus save $100 when you bundle an Airwrap with the Airstrait. If you find your roots are still damp, you can then switch to the Root Drying mode, which uses a separate, external air vent to blast hot air at the roots, as well a Cool Shot mode to add shine to finished look. More than three years since it launched its last hair styler – the cordless Corrale in 2020 – Dyson is back with the release of a new hair tool called the Dyson Airstrait.

The Airstrait has some lovely touches that help make hair styling easy. One convenient feature is the auto-pause, which stops the Airstrait running after three seconds of inactivity, only starting again when the arms are pressed together. The Airstrait also only pushes out its fastest airflow when the arms are closed, preventing you from accidentally blowing bits and bobs off your dressing table. I also found the tension bar had just the right amount of grip on my hair, without snagging or pulling on it at all.

Dyson Corrale Hair Straightener

Whether you should buy a Dyson Airstrait depends on your hair type and styling preferences. If you straighten your hair every day and you’re hoping to splash out on some tech to get the job done quickly from wet, with less heat damage, the answer is very much yes. It’s all powered by one of Dyson’s Hyperdymium motors, which the company says spins up to 106,000rpm, generating 3.6kPa of air pressure as it does so.

Another downside is that the Airstrait isn’t as versatile as normal hair straighteners, which can usually curl and wave hair as well as straighten it. Despite my best efforts, I couldn’t achieve curly or wavy results with the Dyson and, when I tried to do this, the diffusers – alarmingly – clipped out of place under the tension. I also tried straightening my partner's thick, curly hair to see how performance varied between hair types. Additionally, I measured the decibel output to gauge how loud the Airstrait was in use.

The only thing spoiling the aesthetic vibe is the absolutely ginormous plug/safety box/styling electronics, which looks like something powering the Oxford Street Christmas lights. If you’ve got a socket right above a skirting board, it will be too big to plug in. By reducing the time spent exposed to heat and cutting out hot plates altogether, the Dyson Airstrait is an excellent choice if you're worried about hair damage. The 45-degree angled blade of focused airflow is a pretty impressive feat of engineering, in more ways than one.

I was pretty dubious of this claim prior to my testing (the Corrale promised much the same but I still find it's fairly easy to snag hairs if I'm not paying attention). Best of all, it's officially helped me overcome my fear of wet-to-dry straighteners. The Dyson Airstrait draws on the same basic principles of heat and tension but takes a different approach, using only controlled hot (but not too hot) air to change the shape of the hair. The Dyson Airstrait comes with a long 198cm cord, and while I’ve never needed to mention a plug in a review before, the Dyson Airstrait is an exception. It comes with a PRCD plug, which is pretty chunky and requires a safety test every time it’s plugged in.

According to my stopwatch, it took 11 seconds to move the tool down my longest layer, which is about 17 inches. With my Airwrap or flatiron, I get a glass-like finish — I didn’t get that with the Airstrait. For a high gloss, I had to go back over my hair with a traditional flatiron, bringing my total styling time to about 45 minutes. Most straightening tools get the job done with ceramic plates that are heated from within, up to 400°F and beyond, explains Trefor Evans, a cosmetic chemist at TRI Princeton. The heat from those plates removes water from the hair (even when hair is dry to the touch, your hair has water in it). Because driving all the water out of the hair structure creates new temporary bonds in the hair that allow it to be (temporarily) anchored into a straight position when pressed and pulled between two plates.

It's also a relief that I no longer have to apply as much heat to my hair with a flat iron to achieve a salon-style look. “For this review, I did a split-head test between the Airstrait and my Revair, both are wet-to-dry tools and both straighten. The Revair is like a vacuum for your hair — it pulls it into a tube to straighten it and get the water out. You can adjust the tension to get the hair as straight as possible. It’s very bulky, though, and has to sit on the bathroom floor or counter — you could never travel with it. All of this sounded great to me, but it was time to put the device to the test.

There are few brands that seem to generate as much hype as Dyson, especially when it comes to the launch of new hair tools. The other thing that might put you off is that, unlike Dyson’s other hair care innovations, the Airstrait does lack a few key features that typically set high-end hair care products above the hoi-polloi. When you’re paying £450 for a luxury product like this, the little things like a storage case, premium finishes and swivel cord do make a difference. If you're dead set on a pair of Dyson straighteners, consider the Dyson Corrale.

The Dyson Airstrait is a hair tool designed to simultaneously dry and straighten your hair. James Dyson, founder and chief engineer, told Allure recently that his vision for the Airstrait was to deliver the ease of use that people love about straighteners but without the damaging hot plates. Its goal is to save you time and save your hair from the heat damage a traditional hair dryer and flatiron can cause.

Choose from 175 degrees, 230 degrees or 285 degrees Fahrenheit when the Airstrait is in “Wet” mode. When its in “Dry” mode, Airstrait lets you chose between 250 degrees and 285 degrees Fahrenheit or “boost” mode to up the ante. The Dyson SuperSonic hair dryer comes with five styling attachments to help you get your ideal look.

With such illustrious predecessors, I had high hopes for the Dyson Airstrait. It’s available in two colours – nickel and copper, or Prussian blue and copper. I tested the first option and was impressed by the Airstrait’s premium finish. The D refers to Dyson, the inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner and the brand that made “airwrap” a verb. D9 is just one small part of the company’s 75-acre technology campus. Especially for curly and coily hair, it's important to be able to straighten from the root; something the Airstrait's design doesn't allow for.
